Villa Monastero in Varenna: Botanical Garden, Scents and Essences of Lake Como

Nearly two kilometers of garden overlooking the water. Citrus trees, jasmine, roses, wisteria, aromatic plants, and species from distant worlds: Villa Monastero tells the story of one of the most botanical sides of Lake Como.

In Varenna, there is a point where Lake Como can also be traversed through its plants. Villa Monastero is not just a historic residence overlooking the water: its botanical garden follows the shore for nearly two kilometers, transforming the route between Varenna and Fiumelatte into a succession of terraces, essences, colors, and scents.

Palms, citrus trees, jasmine, English roses, wisteria, hydrangeas, peonies, and aromatic plants live alongside cedars, cypresses, and other species from different climates. Today, the garden houses over 900 botanical specimens.

It is precisely this coexistence of the Larian landscape and international botany that makes Villa Monastero particularly interesting: not a static garden, but a place that changes with the season, the light, the air, and the distance from the water.

Eight centuries of transformation

From monastery to villa overlooking Lake Como

The history of Villa Monastero began long before the great era of Larian villas.Villa Monastero in Varenna on Lake Como

The building, in fact, derives from the transformation of an ancient Cistercian nunnery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, founded at the end of the 12th century.

Over the centuries, the structure changed function and owners until it gradually took on the identity of the stately residence we know today.

A decisive moment arrived at the end of the 19th century. The German entrepreneur Walter Kees purchased the property in 1897 and made significant changes to both the villa and the park, expanding the garden and building that scenic relationship between architecture, terraces, and the lake that still characterizes the complex today.

In the 20th century, Villa Monastero became public property. Today, the complex includes the House Museum, the Botanical Garden, and the Conference Center.

At Villa Monastero, the garden does not simply accompany the villa. It accompanies the lake.

The Botanical Garden

Nearly two kilometers of botany between Varenna and Fiumelatte

The garden extends along a narrow strip overlooking the eastern shore of Lake Como. The terrain's layout has led over time to the creation of successive terraces, each with different perspectives on the water.

01 Landscape

Terraces on the lake

The path follows the shape of the shore. The vegetation is not separated from the landscape: the lake, mountains, architecture, and garden continuously enter the same field of vision.

02 Botanical collection

Over 900 specimens

Conservation and development work has led the garden to exceed 900 botanical specimens, including local, Mediterranean, and exotic species.

03 Architecture

A garden built to be traversed

Statues, fountains, small temples, decorative elements, and the Kaffeehaus accompany the vegetation and transform the walk into a sequence of different environments.

The botanical vocabulary

What plants and scents to encounter at Villa Monastero

The sensory value of the garden arises above all from its variety. There is no single Villa Monastero scent: it changes as you walk and changes again with the seasons.

LightCitrus grove of Villa Monastero

Citrus trees

The garden preserves a remarkable collection of citrus trees. Leaves, peels, and blossoms introduce a luminous and Mediterranean dimension to the landscape that may come as a surprise in a pre-Alpine context.

Scent

Jasmine and aromatic herbs

In the area dedicated to scented plants, different types of Jasminum can be found along with aromatic herbs. This is the part of the garden where the visual experience gives way more to the sense of smell.

Blooming

Roses, wisteria and peonies

English roses, rare varieties of wisteria, and multicolored peonies create some of the garden's most decorative moments, making the atmosphere of the path change profoundly throughout the year.

Material

Cedars, cypresses and evergreens

Alongside the blooms, the presence of cedars of Lebanon, cypresses, oaks, and evergreens introduces a more vertical, green, and tactile dimension.

Exotic

Palms, agaves, yuccas and dracaenas

Species from distant climates bear witness to the long-standing passion of Larian gardens for botanical rarities and the unique ability of this stretch of coast to host very diverse vegetation.

Texture

Hydrangeas and ferns

Hydrangea paniculata, Hydrangea quercifolia, and collections of ferns complete a landscape in which the shape, color, and texture of the leaves become as important as the bloom.

Varenna and the lake's climate

Why can such diverse species coexist here?

Vegetation and Lake Como in the gardens of Villa Monastero

The garden of Villa Monastero concretely tells of one of the most fascinating features of Lake Como: the ability to welcome botanical species of very different origins into the same landscape.

The lake water, the exposure of the coast, and local conditions contribute to creating an environment favorable to the presence of numerous ornamental and exotic species.

It is a theme that runs through the entire Larian territory, which we have explored in our guide dedicated to the microclimate of Lake Como .

A sensory visit

How to walk through Villa Monastero without just looking

In a botanical garden, it is easy to look for the perfect photo immediately. But Villa Monastero can also be read in another way.

Walk slowly.

Observe how the air changes from one terrace to another. Recognize the moment when a citrus scent, a flower, an aromatic plant, or the greener smell of the vegetation emerges.

Notice the difference between the area closest to the water and the one more protected by the vegetation.

A place becomes memorable when we remember not only what we saw, but also what we felt as we walked through it.

Slow observation

Four details to look for during your visit

01

The relationship with the water

Watch how the vegetation changes as the path gets closer to the lake and how the water continuously enters the garden's perspective.

02

Scented plants

Look for jasmine, aromatic herbs, and citrus trees without rushing. The olfactory experience can be more discreet than the visual one.

03

Botanical contrast

Palms and exotic plants live alongside cypresses, oaks, and species typical of the European landscape. It is one of the elements that define the identity of the place.

04

The season

The same path does not tell the same story all year round. Blooms, leaves, light, and temperature continuously modify the experience.

Botany and olfactory memory

When a garden becomes a language

A garden like Villa Monastero helps to understand why Lake Como is so often interpreted through scent.

Not because there is a single “lake fragrance.” Quite the contrary.

Citrus, flowers, aromatic plants, woods, water, vegetation, and air build a very broad sensory vocabulary. Each perfumer can choose different elements and transform them into their own interpretation of the territory.

It is precisely this relationship between place and olfactory language that we have explored in the Guide to Lake Como Fragrances .

Villa Monastero thus becomes a particularly interesting case: even before the perfume, there is the garden. Before the composition, there are the plants. Before the olfactory memory, there is a real place.

Before the perfume, there is the landscape. Before the memory, there is a place.
